What we do
Sector electrical and electronic waste equipment
Stiftung ear is the ‘Joint enterprise of manufacturers’ in accordance with the Law on electrical and electronic equipment, in short ElektroG. The stiftung was appointed by the Federal Environment Agency to execute large parts of this law. Ear acts mainly as an authority. It registers producers, for example, that would like to place electrical and electronic equipment on the market in Germany. In addition, it coordinates the picking up and provision of transport containers to recycling centres in towns and municipalities.
Sector waste batteries
In the battery sector, stiftung ear has been appointet by the Federal Environment Agency to enforce parts of the Battery Act (BattG). Here, too, stiftung ear acts as an authority. It registers manufacturers who wish to place batteries on the market in Germany. In addition, it approves the so-called self-operated take-back systems, i.e. companies that take back used batteries on behalf of manufacturers of portable batteries.
Consumer initiative (PlanE)

In addition to its duties as an authority, stiftung ear has a legal mandate to educate consumers about the correct disposal of electronic waste. It does this under its brand Plan E. Consumer education is particularly important as too few electrical and electronic waste equipment is still disposed of correctly. However, correct disposal is important. This is the only way to prevent harmful substances from entering the environment and to ensure that valuable resources can be recovered and reused for product manufacture. stiftung ear is therefore making an important contribution to the circular economy. With its consumer initiative, stiftung ear raises awareness for the topic and offers comprehensive information and practical tips to help the public dispose of waste correctly.
